The Vyas Valley Trek is a breathtaking Himalayan journey located in the Dharchula region of Pithoragarh district, Uttarakhand, close to the Indo-Tibet border. Named after Maharishi Vyas, who is believed to have meditated here, this valley is deeply rooted in mythology as well as adventure.
The trek takes you through remote villages, alpine meadows, dense forests, and snow-clad peaks, offering a perfect blend of natural beauty and cultural heritage. It also lies on the route to the sacred Kailash Mansarovar Yatra, making it spiritually significant for pilgrims.
At an altitude of around 3,600–4,000 meters, the valley opens up to panoramic views of majestic Himalayan ranges, including Api, Nampa, and Panchachuli peaks. The region is also rich in flora and fauna, with rhododendrons, alpine herbs, and occasional sightings of Himalayan wildlife.
What makes this trek unique is its blend of mythology, culture, and natural beauty. It lies close to the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra route, and trekkers often experience the deep spiritual energy of the region. Vyas Valley Trek Itinerary (7 Days / 6 Nights)
Day 1: Arrival at Dharchula (900 m)
Reach Dharchula, a scenic border town on the banks of the Kali River.
Check into a guesthouse and complete necessary permits/entry formalities.
Evening at leisure – explore the local market and riverside views.
Overnight stay in Dharchula.
Day 2: Dharchula – Tawaghat – Malpa – Budhi (2,700 m)
Drive from Dharchula to Tawaghat (approx. 20 km).
From Tawaghat, trek begins with a gradual ascent via Malpa (known for its historical landslide site).
Continue trekking to reach Budhi village, a quaint Himalayan settlement.
Overnight stay in Budhi (homestay/tent).
Day 3: Budhi – Chialekh (3,300 m)
Trek through steep ascents with breathtaking mountain views.
En route, enjoy the lush green meadows of Chialekh surrounded by snow-clad peaks.
Camp overnight at Chialekh meadow.
Day 4: Chialekh – Garbyang – Gunji (3,200 m)
Trek towards Garbyang, often called the “Vanishing Village” due to its sinking terrain.
Continue onwards to Gunji, an important halt on the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra route.
Enjoy views of Api and Nampa peaks from Gunji.
Overnight stay in Gunji.
Day 5: Excursion to Vyas Valley (3,600 – 4,000 m)
Trek into the Vyas Valley, the highlight of the journey.
Visit the sacred spots linked with Maharishi Vyas’s meditation.
Witness panoramic views of Om Parvat, Panchachuli, and other Himalayan ranges.
Return to Gunji by evening.
Overnight stay in Gunji.
Day 6: Gunji – Budhi
Retrace your steps back from Gunji to Budhi.
En route, enjoy the changing landscapes and peaceful villages.
Overnight stay in Budhi.
Day 7: Budhi – Tawaghat – Dharchula (Departure)
Trek down to Tawaghat and drive back to Dharchula.
Tour ends with beautiful memories of the Vyas Valley Trek.
How to Reach Vyas Valley Trek (Dharchula Base)
The base for the Vyas Valley Trek is Dharchula, a small border town in the Pithoragarh district of Uttarakhand. It is well-connected by road, with nearby airports and railway stations.
By Air
The nearest airport is Pithoragarh Airport (Naini Saini Airport), about 125 km from Dharchula.
From the airport, hire a taxi or take local transport to reach Dharchula.
The next nearest major airport is Jolly Grant Airport, Dehradun (about 500 km away).
By Train
Dharchula does not have a railway station.
The nearest railway stations are Kathgodam (approx. 410 km) and Tanakpur (approx. 200 km).
From these stations, private taxis or buses are available to reach Dharchula.
By Road
Dharchula is well-connected by road to major towns in Uttarakhand and nearby states.
Road routes include:
Dehradun → Rishikesh → Almora → Pithoragarh → Dharchula
Tanakpur → Champawat → Dharchula
Buses, shared jeeps, and private taxis are available. Roads are hilly and require careful driving.
